Spring School of Geodynamic modeling

The summer school was held from May 16 to 20 at ETH Zurich. The class focused on the implementation of thermal and mechanical models and their application to solve geodynamical problems. The course was practical and involved the development of MATLAB codes.

The class consisted of two parts:

1) a four days introduction to the Finite Difference Method (from Monday to Thursday). This part of the class was lead by Taras Gerya and Paul Tackley and focused on 1D/2D numerical solution of the heat and momentum equations.

  • Monday
  • 9:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00
    Numerical modeling concept
Solving Poisson equation in 1D and 2D
  • Tuesday
  • 9:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00
    Staggered grid concept
Solving Stokes and continuity equations in 2D
  • Wednesday
  • 9:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00
    Advection concept and markers
Advection of material properties in 1D and 2D
  • Thursday
  • 9:00-12:00, 14:00-17:00
    Heat diffusion/advection concept
    Thermomechanical code in 2D

2) a full day of seminar (Friday) which was composed of introductory-to-advanced level lectures to other methods used in Geodynamic. The list of speakers was as follows:

  • 09:00-09:50 Paul Tackley (ETH Zurich): Multigrid solvers and MPI parallelisation
  • 09:50-10:40 Cedric Thieulot (University of Bergen): SimpleFEM: an introduction to the Q1P0 element and its implementation
  • 10:55-11:45 Ritske Huismans (University of Bergen): Use of the ALE (Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian) technique and applications
  • 13:30-14:20 Bernhard Steinberger (GFZ Potsdam): The spectral method for 3D spherical flow modelling and application to backward integration of convection topography evolution
  • 14:20-15:10 Trond Torsvik (University of Oslo): Absolute Reference Frames: Linking Surface and Deep Processes
  • 15:40-16:30 Wim Spakman (University of Utrecht): From data to model in global travel-time tomography
  • 16:30-17:20 Cedric Legendre (Ruhr University of Bochum): Surface wave tomography

TopoEurope

TopoEurope addresses the 4-D topographic evolution of the orogens and intra-plate regions of Europe through a multidisciplinary approach linking geology, geophysics, geodesy and geotechnology. TOPO-EUROPE integrates monitoring, imaging, reconstruction and modelling of the interplay between processes controlling continental topography and related natural hazards. -->
